Richmond County Creations was born out of the need to create and craft things, after surviving a very, very serious motorcycle accident back in 2007.
We were owners of a custom motorcycle shop, Richmond county Choppers, that designed and sold custom motorcycles (Mostly choppers and pro streets) from the beginning of 2004. We worked our shop tirelessly for several years until a careless driver talking on his cel phone changed our lives forever.
On our way to a kids toy run in November of 2007, I decided to hop on the back of my husbands bike rather than take my own. It was a cold November day and I thought I would ride passenger to the run our shop was one of the sponsors of. We met up with several other friends to head down to the starting point. After pulling out and going about 1 block, one of the riders with us slid out on gravel and went f=down. Being the last bike in the group we stopped to aid the fallen biker. All traffic in both lanes of the divided 4 lane road came to a stop. Then suddenly, the driver in far right lane, looking at biker on ground and cell phone to his ear, hit the gas. I saw it coming. He never looked forward but road right into the side of us.
The long story short, I was thrown 35 ft, and my husband was crushed between the bike and the careless drivers car. His beloved Indian chief went up in flames and the driver locked himself in his car refusing to help because he was afraid of the bikers. We had many severe injuries that required numerous surgeries for s both, months in wheel chairs, walkers, sending our 10 yr old to live at his grandparents and since the shop was run by just the two of us, the eventual closure of our business. My husband had 4 surgeries to save hiss right leg. (compound fracture of tibia fibula with 3" tibia bone missing. I had 5 fractured ribs a fractured pelvis that left bone chip in my hip that required surgery a year later, shattered left wrist requiring 2 surgeries, eventual diagnosis or 3 blown out, disintegrated discs in my lower back leaving me no choice but a spinal fusion that failed and another 6 weeks later, that left me worse off than before. They nicked my spinal cord and left me partially paralyzed in my left leg and drop foot.Talk about a complete life change. All over a damn phone call and not paying attention while driving. We were found 100% NOT at fault. Ny had a law against hand held phones but tis man felt he was special obviously and didn't even get a ticket. But to lock yourself in a car because you are afraid of bikers?
Bikers are mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, grandmothers, grandfathers, Aunts and Uncles. Just because we choose to wear leather and boots and ride our bikes, in this case for a good cause, lumped us in, in a close minded persons pea brain as a bunch of 1% bad asses. Its been 11 yrs and I still haven't gotten an apology from this person (can't call him a man after he locked himself in his car)
Needless to say, our business closed, hundreds of thousands in medical bills, Yes, that's right, hundreds of thousands that motorcycle ins didn't cover and nit wit had minimum liability that went to hospital over first weeks stay and lawyers. Depression set in. My business was gone. My love of motorcycles and riding still there but what do I do now? I cant stand for long. I cant walk far. I needed to stimulate my brain to keep from having panic attacks.
So I started crafting, and crafting, and trying new crafts.
Now what do I do with it all? so I opened my first web site and then a shopify store where my crafts were met with a large calling. I had alot of different jewelry geared for the motorcyclist crown. I decided to take my bike designing skills and craft a diaper motorcycle for my sisters baby shower. The ladies went nuts and the orders started coming in. I always crocheted as a hobby but once again, when the stuff I made my sister was seen, orders stared coming in! So I expanded into custom crochet, the jewelry and the diaper motorcycles. I had been crafting stained glass in down time over the years so I started working back when i could at that. Wow, I had alot of crafts going and people started placing custom orders for many different things. Then my handmade blankets seemed to take off, Everyone wanted a specific blanket with their name, their kids names, photos, Irish crochet and so very much more. So while I still try to aim my products towards bikers, as we are and always will be, that's not all I do.I either have yarn and hook in hand , diapers and Harley items and glue gun. stained glass and glass cutter, ban saw, grinder and foil. And so it began and continues.LEA
